Block P (and Wandbereiterbrücke) in the Speicherstadt, Hamburg at night, Germany The Speicherstadt was built between 1885 and 1927 as the world’s largest contiguous warehouse complex on over 100,000 oak and poplar piles to store goods duty-free, which became necessary when Hamburg was integrated into the German customs territory in 1888. Its special feature is the unique combination of red brick buildings in neo-Gothic style, waterways (fleets), bridges, and streets, which, together with the Kontorhaus district, make it a maritime UNESCO World Heritage Site. Noteworthy buildings include the iconic moated castle and museums such as the Speicherstadtmuseum, the Coffee Museum, the Spice Museum, and the German Customs Museum.
