Although the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna is world-renowned for its celebrated sixth-century Byzantine mosaics, the pictorial decoration of the dome dates to a late eighteenth-century intervention: Jacopo Guarana (a Venetian painter), who executed the figural elements and the central narrative scene; Serafino Barozzi and Ubaldo Gandolfi (of the Bolognese school), who were responsible for the illusionistic architectural perspectives (quadratura), the painted coffering, and the floral ornamentation.
