The coffered dome of the Church of Santa Cristina in Cesena (Emilia-Romagna) is the main part of a Neoclassical rebuild wanted by Pope Pius VII. His sister, Ottavia, asked for the project, and the architect Giuseppe Valadier designed it based directly on the Pantheon in Rome. The idea to build this church came in the spring of 1814, while the Pope was staying for three weeks in Cesena, his hometown. He stopped there on his way back to Rome after being freed from his imprisonment in France, where Napoleon had kept him captive from 1809 to 1814. The church, built right in front of the Chiaramonti family palace, was constructed between 1816 and 1825.
