A micrograph of a water flea of the genus Simocephalus in lateral view. The specimen was collected from a town pond in Rakvere, Estonia. The semi-transparent carapace reveals the internal anatomy: the digestive tract filled with bright orange content, pale storage deposits, and the dark compound eye with a reddish pigment spot. The branched swimming antennae with their long setae extend from the head. The image was taken under a microscope with an 8x objective using reflected light against a dark background. A focus stacking technique combining 77 exposures was applied to increase the depth of field.
