Angolan giraffe licking its nose in Etosha National Park, Namibia. Giraffes commonly perform this behaviour to clean and moisten the nostrils, helping remove dust, pollen, parasites, and other debris from the nasal surface. This grooming behaviour is facilitated by the tongue's remarkable length (up to about 45 cm) and muscular flexibility, adaptations that also enable efficient browsing on thorny vegetation.
