IC 10 is the only known starburst galaxy in the Local Group, but it is located behind the plane of the Milky Way in Cassiopeia, which obscures it from view. Although it is filled with young, hot, blue stars, the galaxy's true color is skewed towards brown due to extinction from galactic dust, which preferentially diminishes shorter wavelengths of light, such as shades of blue.

This image has been spectrophotometrically color calibrated to reveal the true color of IC 10, which is more brown than the blue-white expected of a starburst galaxy. However, the H-alpha emission has been significantly enhanced with extra data, revealing fainter regions not normally visible in an RGB image.
