The Malatestiana Library is the only intact 15th-century humanist library in the world, recognized by UNESCO. The library contains 343 manuscript codices, most on parchment, and several codices in Greek and Hebrew, as well as volumes in Italian. Its architecture and furnishings are faithful to the original 15th-century layout, recreating the atmosphere of the time when it was founded by Malatesta Novello. The books are secured to shelves with chains, one or two, to prevent them from being removed. Most of these chains date to the 15th century.
