Crystallization basins in the museum “Las Salinas del Carmen”, Antigua, Fuerteventura, Spain The Museo de las Salinas del Carmen on Fuerteventura tells the story of traditional salt production. The saltworks themselves date back to the 19th century and were an important site for salt production for many decades. In the 1980s, the saltworks was shut down because industrial production and changing market conditions made traditional salt production unprofitable. In order to preserve the cultural heritage and historical significance of the saltworks, the museum was founded and opened in 1995.
