Capsule monstrance of Abbess Elisabeth of Nassau-Hadamar from the Essen Cathedral Treasury; ELISABETH OF NASSAU'S CAPSULE MONSTRANCE Rhineland (?), 1385 Gilt silver, chased, cast, engraved, rock crystal Inv. 26 Abbess Elisabeth of Nassau (r. 1370-1412) had the monstrance made in 1385, as the inscription on the foot tells us: elisabet de nassauwe abba(tissa) ess(e)nd(i)en(sis) mccclxxxv (Elisabeth of Nassau, Abbess of Essen 1385). The center of the monstrance is a capsule sealed with rock crystal discs. It contains part of the cross of Christ. Next to it are relics of the blood of Christ and the crown of thorns. The relics of the Passion of Christ reflect the close connection to the liturgy of the Mass. Particular emphasis is placed on the Eucharist, which recalls the sacrificial death of Christ in the Holy Mass.
