A water flea of genus Daphnia photographed under a microscope using an 8x objective. The specimen was collected on August 7, 2023, from a pond in the city of Rakvere, Estonia. The lateral view excellently demonstrates the transparent carapace of the water flea, allowing observation of its internal structure. Particularly striking are the orange embryo in the dorsal brood pouch and the greenish digestive tract filled with food particles. Daphnia are among the most common planktonic organisms in freshwater and play a crucial role in aquatic food webs. The specimen was photographed against a black background, which emphasizes the structures of the transparent shell. The lighting technique used was reflected light from a photographic speedlight flash, which particularly highlights the surface patterns and internal anatomy. The image was created using focus stacking technique, which ensures great depth of field throughout the subject.
