Black-backed jackal (Lupulella mesomelas schmidti), Masai Mara, Kenya. The black-backed jackal has occupied eastern and southern Africa for at least 2–3 million years, as shown by fossil deposits in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa. This omnivore occupies a wide range of habitats, from arid coastal deserts to areas with more than 2000 mm of rainfall.
