Detail view of a (small) crane in the harbour, Waterfront, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa The V&A Waterfront in Cape Town was built in the 19th century as a port facility. In 1860, Prince Alfred, son of Queen Victoria, had the first harbour basin built; it was later named after Queen Victoria and him. With the expansion of modern port facilities, the area lost its importance in the 20th century and fell into partial disrepair. In the 1980s, a comprehensive redevelopment began: historic warehouses and docks were restored and combined with shops, restaurants, and hotels.
