View from inside Gruta da Sacristia towards the Atlantic Ocean and the rocky shoreline on the eastern slope of Ponta Negra, in the municipality of Maricá, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The irregular opening of the cavity forms a natural frame around the sea and the coastal outcrops. The geosite contains orthogneisses, ortho-amphibolites and pegmatites, as well as geological structures such as faults, fractures and boudins. The cave was enlarged by differential weathering and erosion of the rocks, combined with marine action. These formations belong to the Cabo Frio Terrane, whose geological record includes rocks approximately two billion years old and structures related to the continental collision that contributed to the formation of the Gondwana supercontinent.
