Cranes at the Elbphilharmonie (southeast corner) in Hamburg, Germany The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg is one of Hamburg’s most famous landmarks. It is located in HafenCity on the former Kaispeicher A, a brick warehouse dating from 1963. A spectacular glass building with a wave-shaped roof was constructed on top of this historic foundation. The design is by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. Construction began in 2007, and after delays and considerable cost increases, the building opened in January 2017. The total cost was significantly higher than originally planned, which sparked nationwide debate. The centerpiece is the Grand Hall with around 2,100 seats and exceptional acoustics, developed by acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota. In addition to concert halls, the Elbphilharmonie houses a hotel, apartments, and a publicly accessible plaza with panoramic views of the harbour and city. It is considered a cultural symbol of Hamburg and one of the most modern concert halls in the world.
