Volvo PV544 B18 (built in 1961) in the parking lot of the barbecue area in Merfeld, Dülmen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany The Volvo PV 544 was a further development of Volvo’s PV series and was built from 1958 to 1965. It replaced the PV 444 and retained its characteristic rounded pontoon shape in the style of the 1940s. With the introduction of the B18 engine in the early 1960s, the PV 544 was equipped with a modern 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with an overhead camshaft. Depending on the model, it delivered between 75 and 90 hp. The engine was considered robust and durable, which contributed significantly to the model’s good reputation. The PV 544 was known for its solid workmanship, high safety standards (including early three-point seat belts) and reliability. It also enjoyed success in rallying, for example in international long-distance rallies. By the end of production in 1965, over 440,000 units had been built.
